World No Tobacco Day is celebrated on May 31 to raise awareness of the harm caused by tobacco use. Tobacco use kills more than 80 million people worldwide every year. In addition to the human cost, tobacco use also leads to environmental degradation.

Tobacco use is one of the factors that would negatively impact efforts to achieve the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to reduce tobacco-related deaths by a third in here there.

WHO member countries agreed to observe World No Tobacco Day on May 31, 1987. Since then, the day has been marked each year with a relevant theme. For this year, the theme is “Protecting the environment”. According to the WHO, “the harmful impact of the tobacco industry on the environment is vast and growing, adding unnecessary pressure to the already scarce resources and fragile ecosystems of our planet”.

Health programs

Each year, the World Health Organization honors governments, organizations and individuals for their efforts and contributions to tobacco control. This year WHO has selected Jharkhand for the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD)-2022 award. India runs a national tobacco control program to educate people about the health consequences of smoking. It also helps formulate policies and initiatives that could help the country achieve its goal. This program was extended to Jharkhand in 2012.

Health consequences

Tobacco use can lead to lung cancer, which mainly strikes people with a significant history of smoking. About 80-90% of people diagnosed with lung cancer have a history of smoking. Tobacco is the leading cause of death among men and the second leading cause when both men and women are included.
