Umran Malik warmed up the bench throughout the India-South Africa T20I series. The speedy bowler, who impressed with his speed in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022, is also part of India’s squad for the Tour of Ireland later this month. Malik finished fourth best wicket taker in IPL 2022 with 22 scalps in 14 matches. Many former players, including greats Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan, said they had rarely seen such an exciting prospect in Indian cricket. It remains to be seen if 22-year-old Malik will soon get his chance in India playing in the XI.

Former Indian cricket captain Dilip Vengsarkar has now commented that Malik has no chance in the playing XI.

“It’s not fair of me to comment since I’m not part of the team’s management. Not playing against Umran immediately could be part of the team’s strategy. You never know… Maybe they’re waiting to release him at the right opportunity.” Dilip Vengsarkar told the Telegraph.

Earlier, Vengsarkar said Umran ‘deserves to play’ in international cricket, especially when the team is playing at home.

“Everyone has a different view of the game. But I think he deserves to play after showing that kind of speed and accuracy in the IPL. Also, when you play (international cricket) at home, it’s a good time to test someone like him,” Vengsarkar told the TAUT.

“He’s one of the most exciting prospects I’ve seen in the last 10 years. I hope he does well because he looks very fit and he has that fast bowling aggression. He has pace and precision. I think he should be able to play for India for a long time.”

Gavaskar also gave a big compliment to Malik. “The last time I try to think… The last time I was really excited to see an Indian player was Sachin Tendulkar… when Sachin Tendulkar… you know, young Indian. And after that, I was excited to watch Umran Malik,” he said during the T20I India-South Africa series.
