Ukraine war: Johnson says UK ready to demine to get grain out


LOndon’s insurance market has placed the entire region around the Black Sea on its high-risk list, which means skyrocketing shipping costs.

Boris Johnson said the UK was considering all options when asked if the government could provide sovereign guarantees for marine insurance.

“What the UK perhaps has to offer, first and foremost, is expertise in marine insurance, and a lot of expertise in moving goods across, shall we say, maritime areas challenged,” he said.

When asked if Britain was prepared to help Ukraine clear the area, the Prime Minister replied: “Yes, I don’t want to go into technical or military details, but you can base yourself on what we’ve already done by providing material to the Ukrainians are helping each other protect that we’re certainly talking to them on a technical level to help demine Odessa.”

Any demining effort would be the biggest attempt since the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, and any demining project off Ukraine would take several months.

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said separately on Thursday that urgent action needed to be taken over the next month, ahead of the next harvest, to maintain supplies.
