In the week that Russian President Vladimir Putin launched referenda in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine and expressed a thinly veiled threat to use nuclear weapons against the West, Talking Europe meets with Josep Borrell, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

Speaking to TAUT from the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Borrell tells Europe editor Catherine Nicholson that “no one will recognize the results” of the referendums in Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, which took about Representing 15 percent of Ukrainian territory.

The High Representative also reaffirms that EU countries must “continue to support Ukraine” – including military support and sanctions against Russia.

Finally, when asked about Putin’s threat to “use all the means available to Russia” to – in his words – “protect Russia,” Borrell tells TAUT that “we must avoid escalation…including verbal escalation.” and that “EU states incredible unity” in the face of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
