The Kia Carens minivan earned a 3-star rating for adult and child occupant protection in the latest round of Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) crash tests. The Indian-spec Kia Carens MPV has been tested to its most basic safety specifications, fitted with two front airbags, two side airbags and two head protection side airbags. The ESC is also a standard fit in this spec. The Kia Carens have also been tested in the event of a side impact and have passed the UN95 regulatory requirement.

Alejandro Furas, Global NCAP General Secretary, said: “Global NCAP welcomes Kia’s decision to make six airbags standard equipment in the Carens ahead of a regulatory requirement. However, we expected better performance from this model. It remains a concern that global car brands such as Kia, which normally get 5 star ratings in other markets, still do not reach this level in India.
The Kia Carens have also been tested in the event of a side impact and have passed the UN95 regulatory requirement.

During the evaluation, the Kia Carens minivan demonstrated an unstable structure, marginal protection of the driver’s chest and weak protection of the driver’s feet. Global NCAP noted that the model is still sold with a lap belt in the rear center seating position instead of a three-point seat belt. The Kia Carens scored 9.30 points out of a total of 17 points in adult safety and 30.99 points out of 49 in child safety. The car was tested at a speed of 64 km/h.

The 3-year-old child’s dummy was placed in a forward-facing child seat with an adult seat belt and support leg. Excessive forward motion was prevented for the same. The dummy imitating a 1.5 year old child was placed in a child seat using an adult belt and support and the level of protection offered was found to be good. The cars do not offer 3-point seat belts at all seating positions and the passenger airbag cannot be disconnected in the event of a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat.
