Indian racing ace and Formula 2 driver Jehan Daruvala recently announced he would be testing a Formula 1 car with McLaren, and now 4 days later he has tweeted pictures of himself driving a car from Formula 1 McLaren. Daruvala took the wheel of McLaren’s 2021 F1 challenger, the MCL35M – which also won the 2021 Italian GP and helped McLaren finish third in the 2021 Constructors’ Championship – at Britain’s famous Silverstone Circuit. Daruvala completed 130 laps of the circuit in 2 days, more than double the distance of the British Grand Prix. It also means the Indian driver is now eligible for a Formula 1 super license, which is required to compete at the pinnacle of motorsport.
Speaking about his incredible achievement, Jehan Daruvala said: “I really enjoyed my first time behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. I immediately felt at home and even though it was physically more demanding than anything I had ridden in the past, I didn’t have any problems with my physical condition”. “Overall I’m very happy with how the two days went, how I coped and the mileage we were able to cover. I felt I was able to get closer to the limit with every lap and I can’t wait to drive one of these cars again.”
Jehan Daruvala is currently the only driver in the FIA Formula 2 championship, which is Formula 1’s direct feeder series. He is third in the championship with 73 points and has racked up multiple podiums this season. He is currently part of the Red Bull Junior team, who also supported the test, and although his main objective is to win the 2022 Formula 2 championship, he will surely have his eye on securing a Formula seat. 1 for 2023.
