Jenn Suhr, the women’s pole vault gold medalist at the 2012 Olympics, announced her retirement Thursday as the U.S. Outdoor Championships began in Eugene. Suhr, who won Olympic silver in Beijing before winning gold in London four years later, had already opted out of the national championships, which are the selection meeting for the world championships at the same venue in Hayward Field in July.
“Words will come to me soon but my heart and soul are ready for the next phase of my life,” Suhr, 40, who has competed in every national championship since 2006, said on social media on Thursday.
“Pole vaulting has unlocked more than I could have wished for and allowed me to experience more than I could have dreamed of.”
Suhr, who knocked down Russian Yelena Isinbayeva in London, still has the highest inside clearance of 5.02m, set at the 2013 US Championships.
