A dog shelter has revealed the tragic story of a puppy who was abandoned on the street with a bag of his toys.
The dog, named Baby Girl, was tied to a fire hydrant in the US town of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
She was rescued by the Humane Society, and the charity has opened up about how Baby Girl’s former owner made the heartbreaking decision to abandon her.
After reading a heartbreaking note left with the little dog, which explains that her owner felt unable to cope with the financial responsibility of caring for an animal with serious health problems, as she had to pay for her own medical care , the Humane Society got the puppy checked.
They discovered that she had diabetes mellitus, otherwise known as canine diabetes, which means her body has problems managing blood sugar levels.
A Human Society spokesperson said: “It can be an expensive condition to manage, requiring a monthly purchase of insulin and potentially other medical supplies.
“In total, it could cost hundreds of dollars a month, depending on your own vet’s assessment and the cost of supplies in your area.”
Explaining how the owner’s decision to give up on her pet was an “act of desperation”, they thanked her for asking for help and trying to do her best with her dog.
In a message to the former owner, a spokeswoman said: “First of all, we’re sorry you had to part ways with your best friend.
“It’s obvious how much you loved him and we can see that you did your best while battling your own medical complications and life challenges.
“We see your love in the bag you have carefully packed with all his favorite things.
“We see your love in the way you attached her leash so she wouldn’t get hit by a car.
“We see your love in the way you placed her in the middle of a neighborhood where she would quickly be found.
“We see your love in how happy and healthy Baby Girl looks.
“And we see your love in the note you left, begging someone to help when you can’t.”
Thanking the owner for putting Baby Girl first, the animal charity welcomes anonymous surrenders no questions asked.
“We see that you did what you thought was best for your beloved pup and we appreciate your compassion,” they added.
“Rest assured she is safe, she is getting a lot of attention from our team.
“We wish you all the best and hope that if you see this you can rest a little more peacefully knowing that your little girl has a bright future ahead of her.”
Just days after being cared for by the animal charity, Baby Girl got a new home – and her former owner couldn’t be happier.
The spokesperson added: “The international response to this pup’s story has been overwhelming, and the outpouring of kindness for his former owner has truly filled our hearts to the brim.
“We have been in touch with the previous owner, and are grateful to have had the chance to communicate with her and honor her wishes for Baby Girl to find a new home.
“We have passed on the support resources that have been offered to him by this generous community.
“She expressed her gratitude and joy that Baby Girl would soon find her next loving home.”
