Alleged Pixel 7 prototype appears on eBay months before its official debut

An alleged prototype of the Pixel 7 has surfaced on eBay – just weeks after Google officially revealed the phone during its I/O keynote earlier this month. While the availability of the Pixel 7 is slated for later this year, a seller has been able to list its alleged prototype for sale. The prototype appeared with the distinctive design that appeared during the keynote, carrying the single camera bar on the back. It appears to have the deep obsidian black hue that Google itself showed off when it premiered Pixel 7. Separately, Google is working on a new high-end Pixel phone that might be different from the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. and deliver a premium viewing experience.

As Point by Android commentator Mishaal Rahman, the alleged Pixel 7 prototype has been listed for sale by a seller on eBay. The phone appears to have the same design language that Google showed off during the I/O 2022 keynote.

The listing for the prototype, which was closed at the time of this article’s filing but was accessible via its cached version, included some additional images of the phone to show its sides, front and back in detail.

Overall, the prototype design looks quite similar to the Pixel 7 that Google revealed earlier this month. One of the images also states that the phone, which appeared to be in working order, has 128GB of built-in storage. This suggests that the Pixel 7 could be available in a 128GB model.

An image that appeared on the listing shows the phone has a GVU6C model number. A glimpse of the Pixel 7 Pro – a higher variant of the Pixel 7 series – was also reportedly seen in one of the images where the reflection of what appears to be the phone’s camera bar appeared on the back of the prototype.

Exact details on how the seller was able to obtain the prototype are not available. However, in a conversation with The Verge, the seller claimed to have bought the phone from a wholesaler.

The seller has listed the phone for sale on eBay with a starting bid of $450 (around Rs. 34,900). The listing, however, ended shortly after it was made public.

Notably, this isn’t the first time a Pixel device has appeared in detail on the web ahead of its official availability. The Pixel family, in fact, has a long history of leaks and rumors.

Google, however, attempted to shut down the rumors this time by revealing the Pixel 7 series well ahead of its official launch scheduled for later this year – most likely in October. Still, the listing on eBay suggests the company still needs to work on tightening its supply-side control to limit early appearances of its upcoming devices.

In addition to surfacing the alleged Pixel 7 prototype, Google has a new high-end Pixel phone in development. As reported by 9to5Google, the new device is codenamed G10 and its references have been spotted in Android kernel code. It’s all about having a top-notch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. The screen of the mystery Pixel phone happens to be Chinese BOE and has specs that include QHD+ resolution (1,440 x 3,120 pixels) which matches that of the Pixel 6 Pro. Moreover, the screen would have a size of 71×155 mm.

The resolution and screen size of the new Pixel device suggests that it would be a phone and not a tablet or other device.
